Delta Airline expands facial recognition technology at Los Angeles International Airport. Currently it uses a camera on a single site, but will soon make an important update.

Delta has been experimenting with facial recognition cameras to improve the customer experience. With the help of this technology, customers use it for self-check-in, check-in and boarding points for international routes.

Delta Airline also uses this facial recognition technology at other US airports, such as Detroit, Minneapolis and Salt Lake City. Initially, the implementation of this procedure faced some confidentiality issues, being an optional solution. After this technology has passed its experimental phase, many aviation companies can make its use mandatory.

However, the airline mentions that no biometric passenger data will be stored. And yet, this technology has an upward trend. Last week, American Airlines introduced biometric boarding for certain flights from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. At present, this is not obligatory, but only optional.

However, there is an increased efficiency with facial recognition technology. Companies hope that this will improve and reduce the time required for boarding. Earlier this year, Lufthansa said it had managed to board 350 passengers on an Airbus A380 in just 20 minutes. The biometric boarding was introduced by the German company for a flight from Miami to Munich in February this year.

US Customs and Border Protection have confirmed that facial recognition takes less than two seconds and has a 99% matching rate. These reports make the investment perspective in this technology all the more desirable.

Also, airlines have a keen interest in implementing this technology, as it would reduce personal maintenance costs. On the other hand, the passengers are the most advantageous, besides reducing the waiting time, but also because they would not need documents to carry them permanently.

Finally, biometrics promises to make boarding an easier process for both airlines and passengers. Successful testing has given the airline confidence to expand its use. In the next few years, we will see more airlines and more locations experimenting with its use.
